There’s more to being a door supervisor than just standing by the door and checking your identity. In this country, between protecting a place, security protocols and defusing conflicts and potentially dangerous situations, it is surprising that a door supervisor is always able to stay up until the end of the night.

You’ll find that most door supervisors are trained in first aid on the job and, as a result, have the right amount of first aid skills to deal with a person in any situation.

However, there are some situations that, for whatever reason, may require a little more “creativity” to deal with the incident in question.

So here at Main Event Security, we’ve brought you the best first aid hacks, so you don’t need to experiment and potentially cause a scene.

Here are 5 first aid tips that will help you in your work as a door supervisor.

Stop the bleeding instantly

In this day and age of rapid knife attacks, this one is an absolute must. Bleeding is something that must be approached with the right approach. The most ideal approach is to apply pressure to a specific wound. It will be helpful to have towels and gloves with you during this operation and you will find that most sites have a first aid kit with the necessary supplies.

One thing to note is that this pressure must be maintained for fifteen minutes. Fifteen minutes is usually enough to stop the flow.

Dealing with the consequences of an acid attack

We have covered the impact of acid attacks and how they should be dealt with previously. Acid attacks are a traumatic event and should be treated as soon as the attack has taken place. In the event of an attack, immediately rinse the affected area with fresh water or a saline solution (saltwater) and ensure that this source is not contaminated.

Continue to wash the burned body part with cold water until the pain begins to disappear. This may take about 45 minutes or up to an hour. During this time, the ambulance service and authorities should be contacted.

Treat burns with water.

Burns aren’t fun, in fact, just the opposite. There really is no good-faith secret when it comes to treating burns. Just like acid, burns should be treated with water as soon as the burn is curved. However, once you have a slight burn, place it under cold, running water and leave it there for at least 25 minutes.

Despite popular rumours, only water should be applied. Mustard, eggs, butter, margarine or anything else you can find in the fridge should not be applied. They don’t cure or soothe the burn. In fact, it usually just makes the burn worse. And it makes you stinky.

And let’s be honest, no body wants to be smelling of mustard, especially on a night on the town.

In the case of fainting

If one of your over eager punters has fainted in the queue after waiting for ages to get the club, first things first is ensuring the individual is positioned in a safe and secure position.

Make sure the person is lying on their back while raising their legs to restore blood flow to the brain. Loosen any tight clothing the person may be wearing and, if there is water, try to wake them up with a few splashes on the face.

Performing CPR

When you think of “first aid”, the first thing that comes to mind is CPR, the technique that could make all the difference for someone who has collapsed and is in cardiac arrest. It’s always best to take a course, so you should know the proper procedures and have practiced them beforehand. In fact, our Workplace First Aid Training course is the perfect recipe for acquiring these CPR skills. While there is really no “hack” so to speak when it comes to CPR, having the skills and knowledge, not to mention the experience, makes someone a more reliable candidate to offer this lifesaving practice.
