Security guards and door guards are two very closely related jobs in the private security industry, but what exactly is the difference?
Security Guard
In general, a security guard may work in a variety of unlicensed premises, including the retail and corporate sectors. However, security guards are not allowed to work in premises that allow the consumption of alcohol, such as bars and clubs.
Door Supervisor
On the other hand, a door supervisor is the person who works in a room authorized by a local governing body. These typically include premises serving alcohol such as bars, pubs, clubs and other places of entertainment. The role of the door supervisor is to assume responsibility for the safety and security of visitors and customers on the premises. They are responsible for judging the suitability of persons entering the premises and are responsible for making appropriate decisions as to who gains entry and who is deemed unacceptable.
SIA licence
Although a door supervisor and security guard do not require academic qualifications, appropriate training is necessary to give you a complete understanding of the role.
At the end of your training, you will be allowed to apply for your SIA badge. It is illegal to work in the private security sector without a valid SIA licence. And could result in heavy fines or even prison sentences. Hiring unauthorised personnel is also against the law and the employer will also be punished under the law.
So, to summarize, while an authorized door supervisor can act as a security guard, a security guard, even with the required licence, cannot replace a door supervisor.
