From Friday, July 24th, it will be mandatory to wear face masks in England to go to stores, as implemented on Public Trasport.

While this is a necessary safety precaution against VIDOC-19, have you ever wondered how face masks impact video surveillance images?

What exactly does this challenge mean for CCTV operators?

Hiding the Challenges for CCTV Operators
As may be suggested, traditional video surveillance images are becoming less and less valid because of the increasing need for facial coatings.

Some of the challenges that CCTV operators may face could include;

  • Analyzing emotions and facial expressions
  • Recognize individuals who may have been previously banned
  • Identify someone who has stolen or committed other crimes
  • Muffled audio

You understand… People simply become more difficult to identify because of the necessary use of masks.

Facial recognition technology

Automatic facial recognition software has made its way into law enforcement around the world. Subsequently, the British government announced that it was investing approximately £4.6 million in upgrading facial recognition software.

Amarjot Singh of the University of Cambridge designed an algorithm to locate 14 key facial recognition points.

The algorithm is said to have been able to identify up to 77% of people wearing “disguises”.

Because this technology is so new, it is difficult to tell how accurate the readings will be over time. However, the results of the survey would have been published in October.

The result of this new software may mean that CCTV operators may require additional training on the software, as role expectations are potentially set at a higher level.

Thermal Imaging Technology

As you may have heard, thermal imaging has also been introduced into the British security system.

Companies such as Bullitt and Vodafone UK have contributed to their developments by creating cameras designed to capture the temperature of people remotely.

There are points that highlight both the advantages and disadvantages of thermal imaging. However, some suggest that, at the very least, thermal imaging could help prevent a “second wave” from occurring.

Just as facial recognition technology can have an impact on the security industry, thermal imaging can also mean additional training for CCTV operators.

Future CCTV Operators

The CCTV sector is about to face many new challenges and technological changes.

More than ever, you need to explore the options available to improve your skills and learn new information.

If you are a CCTV operator and you are concerned about the upcoming changes in the industry, keeping up to date on upcoming technology is a great way to make sure you are ahead of the curve.
