With what seemed to take a lifetime, the agreement on the Brexit was finally reached. With that, we thought we would look at the impact of Britain’s exit from the EU on the security sector and what could be reserved for new and existing SIA licensees.

Positive outlook

Taking a very positive approach to the situation and trusting Boris Johnson’s statements, he believes that leaving the EU will lead to a wave of investment in the UK, creating a mini boom in our economy. With this potential boom, it will hopefully lead to increased demand for jobs and therefore an increased need for security guards to look after offices, shops and when the pandemic hits bars and clubs.

Once the agreement is concluded, it could also lead to a decrease in the workforce from EU countries and with a large proportion of security guards and door guards holding SIA licences belonging to EU nationals, this could create more opportunities for people looking to start their careers in the security sector or for those who have found it difficult to work in these difficult times.

The other side of the coin

Making sense and examining the potential consequences of Brexit for the security sector is the potential for companies to move their headquarters outside the UK. This would then lead to heavy job losses in several sectors and could also see global security companies withdrawing from the UK as well.

However, this could lead to the growth of smaller security companies in the security sector, which could slightly offset the potential negative impacts.
